History of Port Huron

While the territory that is known as Port Huron today was first occupied by Ojibwa Indian tribes, French colonists settled in the area during 1814. They built a small fort at the base of Lake Huron, which they named Fort Gratiot. It was in 1857 when the fort was renamed Port Huron and incorporated as a city. Port Huron was a popular destination for many immigrants due to its abundance of employment opportunities in the lumber and shipbuilding industries. In fact, by the year 1870, Port Huron was one of the largest cities in lower Michigan. In 1871, the city was named as the county seat of St. Clair County.
